Practice Deep Breathing Exercises
Engage in a breathing exercise. 4-7-8 breathing exercises are a popular method for relieving anxiety. (Read more about 4-7-8 breathing exercises here, here, or here). This exercise is relatively safe, but the goal is to expel more than is inhaled. This leads to a rapid decrease of carbon monoxide inside the body, and it can cause lightheadedness.
- Quietly inhale through your nose while silently counting to four.
- Hold your breath for a count of seven.
- Exhale through your mouth with another whoosh sound for a count of eight.
- Repeat the process three more times for a total of four breath cycles.
- Breathe normally for a minute and repeat the four breath cycles as able.
As you get better with this exercise, work your way up to six sets of four cycles.
Embrace Sleep
By this point you should be ready to sleep. But, if you still feel full of energy, Prudence has one more trick up her sleeve. This last method is something we call the Inverted Rainbow. It’s origins are unknown, but our founder ran into this technique during the early days of the internet. After years and years of testing, the technique rarely fails to put her to sleep.
- Get comfortable in your sleep position.
- With your eyes closed, picture a red colored “7” in your mind.
- Breathe in gently as you hold the mental image in your mind.
- Take your time, explore the mental image. What is the size of the number? What is its texture? Can you feel it? Smell it? Taste it? Focus on the imagined number while breathing gently.
- When it feels “right”, let the “7” dissolve on a slow breath out.
- Replace the “7” with an orange-colored “6” and repeat the process.
- Then, a yellow-colored “5”
- Next a green-colored “4”
- Then, a blue-colored “3”
- Followed by an indigo-colored “2”
- And,finally, a violet-colored “1”
